A simple card with a simple message of gratitude for a loved one. At this time of year, most Americans celebrate Thanksgiving. But, unfortunately, this holiday was born out of historical events that tend to be white-washed by our society. What we know as Thanksgiving was born out of the massacre of Native and Indigenous peoples, and the theft of their lands. Furthermore, there is no actual evidence that Native Americans were invited to the celebrations of the colonizers, and our modern day celebrations tend to be steeped in cultural appropriation.
But, many of us did not grow up knowing these roots, and have come to see this as a time to gather together as family. While this tradition will most likely not go away for many, we should acknowledge its roots and give reparations to Indigenous peoples at this time.
